Easy Ways to Stay Cozy This Winter
The temperatures are continuing to drop, and the holidays are right around the corner! That means it’s time to cozy up, get comfortable and spend time with your friends and family. We have some tips that’ll keep the cold air under control, and you and your loved ones warm all season long.
Check For Air Leaks
Check for drafts around your chimney, and apply caulk or weatherstripping around windows and doors. A little bit of cold air can make a big difference when it’s leaking inside your home from multiple areas. You could also consider using insulated curtains and thick blinds if your windows are not well insulated, to minimize heat loss during the winter months.
Use a Programmable Thermostat
Programmable thermostats like the Nest Learning Thermostat will keep your family warm while saving you money on utility bills. After installation it “learns” the temperatures that you prefer during the exact times of day you prefer them, and programs itself to follow that schedule. When you leave your house, it’ll save energy while you’re away thanks to built-in sensors and access to your smart phone’s location.
Change Your Air Filter Monthly
Changing your air filter once a month is quick, easy and affordable. When your filter is clogged with dirt and debris, airflow is reduced and your HVAC system has to work harder than it needs to. This can lead to maintenance problems and higher utility bills — two things you want to avoid, especially around the holidays.
Schedule Maintenance
Have a professional take a look at your furnace before winter arrives. A preventative maintenance visit will allow us to check your system for anything that needs to be repaired or replaced. We’ll also test for carbon monoxide, and check for clogged filters. Don’t wait until it’s freezing outside to find out your furnace is broken or in need of a replacement!
Make Sure Vents Are Open
If vents are closed or blocked by furniture, warm air won’t be able to make it everywhere it needs to in your house. Closing your vents in unused rooms will not save you energy, contrary to popular belief. In fact, additional pressure from one or more closed vents will cause the unit to overwork itself, leading to higher energy costs and the need for major repairs over time.
