Uneven Air & How To Balance It

You may feel like certain areas of your home are hotter or cooler than other areas. Does it feel stuffy when you walk into a certain bedroom, or freezing cold in the living room while it’s comfortable in the dining room? If so,  you probably need your air system balanced. It’ll make everyone more comfortable, improve air circulation and increase the overall efficiency of your HVAC system. Here are a few things you can do to improve the air flow balance in your home.

Cover the Windows

One simple thing you can do to keep a room cooler is add blinds, curtains or drapes to the windows. In the summertime, sunlight hits standard windows and enters the house in the form of heat. It’ll be harder to balance your air flow if windows are opened or uncovered in a room that already feels warmer than others.

Prevent Airflow Restrictions

Make sure that vents aren’t blocked by couches, tables or entertainment centers. If one or more vents are blocked, your HVAC system will have to work harder to cool your home since cold air isn’t making it into those rooms. You should also make sure pets aren’t blocking vents by laying on top of them. Turn on a fan in the room when pets come in from outside to cool them off instead.

Professional Help

For the big fix, a professional technician will need to check your system’s blower fan and ductwork. If your ductwork has an air leak, that’s likely the reason for the uneven distribution of cool air in your house. Ductwork air leaks can cause about 30 percent of the cool air in your home to be wasted, so it’s best to get the problem solved sooner rather than later!
