“Warm” Holiday Wishes: How Does a Furnace Work?

Brrr! It’s beginning to feel a lot like winter. You probably know that your furnace is what keeps your home nice and warm during the cooler months of the year, but do you know how it works? If not, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve broken it down for you below:

How Your Electric Furnace Works

  1. When the temperature in your home dips below the temperature you’ve set the thermostat to, signals are sent out. This lets the furnace know it’s time to begin another heating cycle, and it’s also time to activate the HVAC fan.
  2. Air is pulled into the system through your filter like a vacuum, and pushed through a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is a sealed chamber that heats up nearby air. The cooler air absorbs the heat and reaches a warm temperature.
  3. The warmed up air is then blown through your ductwork and vents, heating up all of the rooms in your home.
  4. The thermostat detects when the temperature in your home has reached the desired level, and sends a signal to your furnace and blower motor to switch off.

Warning Signs

Hopefully you won’t have to deal with any furnace problems this year, but there are a few warning signs you should be on the lookout for. If you notice strange noises coming from your furnace, it seems to constantly need a repair, the air in your home isn’t getting as warm as you want it to, or your electric bill has increased dramatically, you should call a professional to take a look at your unit. If your unit is old or needs a lot of work done, it may be best to replace it. One of our skilled technicians will be able to help you decide on the best option for you and your family.
