Up to Snow Good: Why Is My Heater Blowing Cold Air?

It’s December, and you know what that means — cold air and warm holiday wishes! While the weather outside can be frightful, it’s nice to snuggle up indoors with your loved ones and spend quality time together. However, if your heater is blowing cold air, your family may end up feeling frosty. Check out some common causes of this HVAC issue below.

Duct Leaks

If there are holes in your air ducts, you may experience cold spots throughout your home. This may cause you to believe that your furnace isn’t working due to the chilly air and uneven temperatures in certain spaces. If you suspect that this may be the case, have a professional take a look at your ductwork. Once the right repairs are made, you’ll be feeling cozy and your furnace can properly  do its job again.

Thermostat Issues

Sometimes it’s easy to overlook the little things, especially during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season! Make sure that your thermostat is set to “auto” instead of “on.” If it’s set to “on,” your system will continually run the fan even when the furnace isn’t operating. You should also double check some simple things like that you’ve switched to “heat” instead of “cool,” that nobody else has been changing the temperature,  and that the batteries aren’t dead or low.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

If the circuit breaker controlling your electric heater has tripped, you may need to reset the breaker. If your heating elements aren’t working properly, your system will blow cold air instead of warm air. You should call a professional immediately if your breaker continues to trip, or you think your heating elements may be burned out.

Dirty Air Filter

If your air filter is dirty and clogged with debris, the air flow to your HVAC system can become restricted. This causes your system to not be able to create and distribute warm air throughout your home properly. Your utility bills may go up, but you may feel like your house isn’t getting as warm as you need it to be. Change your filter every month — it only takes a moment, and makes a world of difference.
