Why Does My Air Conditioner Run Constantly?
Summer is in full swing, and keeping your house cool and comfortable is probably a priority to you. If your AC is constantly running, your utility bills can quickly become incredibly expensive. We want to highlight a few common causes of an air conditioner that never seems to shut off, and what you can do to fix the problem.
Your Unit Isn’t the Right Size
If your air conditioning unit is too small for your home, it has to work harder than it needs to to keep your house cool. Even then, it may feel like your home just isn’t getting as cold as you want it to be. If your unit is too large, it won’t properly dehumidify your home, causing the air to feel sticky and moist. Having the proper unit installed in your home makes a huge difference when it comes to comfort and affordable utility bills.
Dirty Coil or Broken Thermostat
If your condenser coil is covered in dirt and debris, it makes it a lot harder to cool your home. Our annual maintenance agreement prevents this problem, as we clean out the unit twice a year during our inspections. If your thermostat isn’t functioning properly, it may not turn off once the temperature it’s set to is reached. If this is the case, you need to have your unit checked for repairs.
Leaking Ductwork
You may be losing cold air through leaks in your system’s ducts. If enough air is leaking out, your air conditioner won’t be able to cool your home to the temperature you’ve set the thermostat to even if it’s running all the time.
Clogged Air Filter
If your air filter is caked with dirt and debris, your unit will work much harder than it should. Even then, it may not reach the temperature you’re looking for. If the right amount of air isn’t blowing over the coils, the system won’t be able to cool the air to the correct temperature or properly remove humidity from your home.
