AC Efficiency Tips

It’s heating up outside, and we all know what that means when it comes to air conditioning—higher electricity bills. Don’t spend more than you need to just to stay comfortable. These quick, easy tips can make a world of difference for you and your family.

Day-to-Day Tips

When nobody is home during the day, set the thermostat five to ten degrees higher than normal to save energy. If you don’t have a smart thermostat, like the Nest Learning Thermostat, now is the perfect time to upgrade! The Nest thermostat will automatically adjust the temperature in your home during the hours of the day that you’re away, then cool the house off just in time for you to arrive home.

Other daily tips include making sure the blinds and curtains are closed on hot days, keeping appliances away from the thermostat, and using ceiling fans while you’re in a room. Set your thermostat as high as you comfortably can at all times, as small changes in temperature can have a large effect on your energy bills. It’s also smart to avoid using heat-producing appliances, such as your oven, during the hottest hours of the day. Use a slow-cooker or microwave instead, if you can.

Long-Term Tips

Inspect  your windows, and check for cracks and tears in the seal or frame. Seal leaks around windows and doors to keep hot air from making it inside. Schedule preventative maintenance twice a year to ensure that your system is running as efficiently as possible. If you need to replace your system, do so before the hottest months of the year arrive—and they’re right around the corner. Insulate your ductwork, change your air filter once a month, and clean debris out of your indoor vents weekly to help maintain proper airflow.
