Does Your Ductwork Need A Re-Do?
Ductwork is responsible for the delivery of hot and cold air in your home. And, if those ducts are dirty or not functioning properly, there could be a serious problem. Simply put, cleaning your ductwork improves the quality of your indoor air. How do you know if your air ducts needs to be cleaned? With a little help from the Environmental Protection Agency, we have compiled a list of three reasons you should consider having your air ducts cleaned.
Reason #1: There is visible mold growth inside ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
Most homeowners may not be able to easily check this themselves because you can’t see very far into the duct work. However, you will be able to smell moldy or musty odors coming from the vents if there is mold buildup or other (stinky) factors.
Reason #2: Your ducts are infested with rodents, insects, or other vermin.
It’s not a pleasant thought, but it’s not too difficult for a critter to climb inside your ductwork. If this is an issue, or if you suspect that this could become an issue, there will definitely be an odor coming from the vents.
Reason #3: Your ducts are clogged with dust and debris.
Again, you may not be able to see the into the ducts very far to tell if there is a definite buildup of dust or debris. But, dust and dirt will be released into your home, and if you spot it on light fixtures, shelves, or other surfaces, it could be an indication that your ducts need to be cleaned.
Dirty ducts affect your home’s overall air quality, and that hidden dirt will eventually circulate throughout your home. This could also impact the efficiency of your home’s heating or cooling system. Changing your air filter often will minimize the dirt that passes through the equipment and ducts. If you feel that your ductwork needs to be checked or that it needs to be cleaned, schedule regular duct inspections so that you can make sure you are protecting your HVAC system.
