Why Is My Air Conditioner Blowing Warm Air?
You feel air coming out of the vents, your thermostat is set to cool, but it’s still hot in your house. If your air conditioner is running, why is it blowing warm air instead of cold air? A variety of issues could cause this, and the professionals at Middleton are here to help.
Frozen AC Unit
We recommend not setting your thermostat below around 70ºF, even on a hot summer day. If your air conditioner is trying to blow incredibly cold air, there’s a possibility that the evaporator coil will freeze. When this happens, cool air is blocked from flowing into your home.
Fan and Air Filter
If your fan is constantly set to “on” instead of “auto,” air is cycled throughout your house even when the air conditioner isn’t cooling the air. It’s best to keep your fan set to “auto” at all times. Dirty air filters don’t allow air to freely circulate throughout the house, often preventing your unit from adequately cooling the area, or using up more energy than necessary. Be sure to replace your air filter once a month.
Leaking Refrigerant or Broken Compressor
When your unit is running low on refrigerant, your air conditioner cannot properly cool the air. Some signs you have a refrigerant leak include energy bills that spike up, a hissing noise, warm air blowing through your vents and ice buildup on your outdoor unit’s line. Refrigerant can be dangerous to handle, so it’s important that any repairs are performed by a certified HVAC specialist. If your compressor is damaged, refrigerant cannot be properly circulated, and your air conditioner will not properly cool your home.
